Roy Keane returns to the City Ground where he was blooded by Brian Clough as Sunderland take on Nottingham Forest in the Carling Cup
Full Speed Ahead The midweek action centers around the Carling Cup and of course those Champions League 2nd leg ties. Liverpool, no doubt still bouncing thanks to their 95 minute winner against Boro should progress at the expense of Standard Liege. Arsenal will be anxious to put the woes of the past weekend behind them, so look out FC Twente. Manchester City, with the lad Sturridge so impressive last Sunday face Danish opposition in Thursday's UEFA Cup match. Monaco is well know for it's jet set lifestyle so Sir Alex and his charges will feel right at home as they take on Zenith in Friday's UEFA Supercup final, although he'd probably prefer 3 Premiership points against Fulham, that fixture of course will be rescheduled at a time to best suite SKY TV.
The Footballing weekend of course will be dominated by the return of the continental heavyweights Serie A, and La Liga. Now, Football Fans, we are well and truly up to full speed. The SPECIAL ONE will lead his team out for the first time away to Sampdoria Saturday afternoon, another Scuddetto the minimum requirement no doubt from Mr Morratti. Back in the EPL one fixture stands head and shoulders above the rest and that one is the visit of the rejuvenated Newcastle United south to the Emirates, before that two decent live matches as West Ham United will look to put the disaster of the past weekend to bed when Blackburn travel to Upton Park and then an Everton side who have scored five goals in a couple of Premiership outings take on Portsmouth. I'm delighted to say however that Football Saturday begins with the live Championship match between Southampton [who beat Manchester United in the 1976 FA Cup Final] and Blackpool [who lost to United in the 1948 FA Cup Final] live ko 7.45am!
On the Continent both PSG and Marseille are in Saturday Ligue 1 action, the former level on points with Lyon atop the French League, while in Germany special mention must go to newly promoted TSG Hoffenheim who proudly sit at the summit of the Bundesliga after another victory this past weekend.
Super Sunday begins with a monumental Capital City derby, as the famous CFC welcome pointless Spurs to South West London, this undoubtedly is the match of the day and propably the weekend - your ball Mr Bentley. Meanwhile Aston Villa still reeling after the late late show at the Victoria Ground face a Liverpool side on a mission, if Liverpool leave with the maximum return here the bus will be painted Monday Morning. Sunderland who worked hard at White Hart Lane last Saturday will have to be at their best to beat a focused Manchester City side, two Manchester United old boys in charge of their respective teams, in the third of Sunday's English Top Flight matches.
Sunday Serie A returns with Roma v Napoli and Fiorentina v Juventus the pick of the matches while in Germany Mr Klinsman and FC Bayern will be expecting their first win of the season as they prepare for Hertha Berlin. Les Verts, St Etienne take on league leaders Lyon in Sunday's prime Ligue 1 fixture but no doubt the eyes of the Football world will be trained on both FC Barcelona and CF Real Madrid, both open their new domestic campaigns on the road. Bernd Schuster's side travel to the Riazor to face Deportivo while Pep Guadiola has his first competitive La Liga match at Numancia, here in the USA we just hope and pray the constant Spanish TV wars don't affect our coverage.
On May 21st 2008 Manchester United played Chelsea in the Final of the UEFA Champions League Final and of course Nevada Smiths was packed to the rafters with fans of both clubs and not for the 1st time a major TV network wanted to be at Nevada Smiths for the game. Richard Roth of CNN came along to broadcast live to the World. Though they reported live all day we only have 3 of those shots.
You have got to love Ms " Bobby Karlton" - who ? and don't think there was a Manchester bias as the camera crew could not move into the bar - no truth to the rumour that they wanted full body armour and a cash bonus. I think Mr. Roth was rather glad when it was all over and was looking forward to his next assignment - reporting from Baghdad.
Nevada Smiths is an Official US Soccer Bar and will show all U.S.A. national teams games with full audio. Official viewing parties for U.S.A. football matches will be held as well as other official US Soccer Federation events.
Look forward to a thrilling weekend with all the best action from the Apertura in Argentina, the Campeonato Brasil and the Primera Division in Mexico while MLS Direct Kick brings us the best of the Domestic Football and don't forget the midweek is Copa Sudamericana, with live matches Tuesday Wednesday and Thursday nights.
As the month draws to a close spare a thought for the National Team coaches as they do their best to prepare their sides for the upcoming World Cup 2010 Qualifiers, particularly an astute Italian gentleman who must be calling on the divine intervention of all his nation's Saints right about this time, a man whose English is not yet quiet up to par will be praying his team do all the talking on the pitch
TV Coverage for Ligue 1
Setanta Sports and the French Football League are still negotiating a deal to show Ligue 1 on Sundays in North America. The deal could be completed at any time. There is intermittent coverage on one of our Middle Eastern Channels but this is unreliable as we cannot access their web site to view the schedule.
TV5 will continue to show 1 game on Saturdays.
